My dog has high liver levels and enlarged gallbladder. Should I use supplements?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

My dog has been having high liver levels and has been getting progressively worse since 2015. I took him to get an ultrasound and they said there is no cancer and didn't diagnose him with pancreatitis. They told me to try denamarin, but I did before and there was no positive or negative affects. They also told me his gallbladder was a little larger than normal. I figured he may have gallstones. I purchased some meds off of Amazon called Break It Up, by Nutra Petz. Is that a good idea?

I am sorry to hear that Mello has not been well. If liver ultrasound is not conclusive, the best way to go forward is to take liver biopsy - this usually gives definite answer what is going on with the liver. Gall bladder stones are very rare in dogs but relatively easy to pick up during ultrasound scan. My advise would be to discuss liver biopsy with your vet. The supplement you bought is not going to hurt your dog, but at the same time it is very unlikely that it is going to help much if it is not used alongside proper diagnostics and other medical treatment.
