Is flying safe for tiny dogs? Worried about altitude breathing.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 4 years and 7 months old | 2.5 lbs

Hello, I am flying with my 4 years Chihuahua from Dominican Republic to Russia 12 hours fly in 10 days. I am extremely worried because its her first time to fly, she is very small only 2 pounds. What worries me the most how she is going to react on high altitude, I am afraid that she can die from breathing problems. Found that many dogs are dying in flights and now want to cancel travel.

Flying can be very stressful, especially when flying with pets. Since Eva is so small she should be able to go in the cabin with you, under the seat. The cabin is pressurized and she will be with you. I always recommend putting a few of her favorite treats in a take off to help with the ear popping. Most of the time the animals fall asleep. More often then not we worry about this and they usually do fine. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and enjoy your trip!
