My dog isn't drinking water after vet. How can I get him hydrated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 8 lbs

My dog just came back from the vet and got some shots done for vomiting, diarrhea, & for dehydration. I also got 1 medicine for the vomiting I believe & it was also a stimulate for appetite. he’s been looking better and eating now but I haven’t seen him for myself drinking any water. Is there something I can buy him keep him hydrated?

Sounds like Thor had a major health issue. Poor guy. You don't need to give him anything special for hydration, just keep fresh water available at all times. If Thor was given fluids at the vet's office, he just might not need the water yet. I'd recommend putting out a fresh bowl now and measuring how much water you put in with a measuring cup, and checking what's left in 24 hours to see how much he's consuming. If it seems like less than usual, call your vet with an update and ask for their advice - he might need more treatment. If at any point he seems weak, pale, or lethargic, check in with you local vet sooner. I hope Thor is feeling better soon!

I'm glad to hear that Thor is doing better. Some easy things you can do to get him to drink water would be to mix warm water with his food. If he likes ice cubes, that's another way to get water. You could also try adding low sodium chicken broth to water, ice cubes or food and this may be effective as well. Good luck with Thor!!!
