My dog's toe cut is swollen. When should I see a vet for infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog had a small cut on her toe that had a but of trouble healing. It finally seems to have closed, but now the area is swollen. I would say the cut and the swelling is about the size of a pea. I would guess it is infected, but I'm unsure at what point I should take her to the vet. Also, money is a concern. We don't have much right now...

I'm sorry to hear that you and Lira are dealing with this. You can soak the foot in an Epsom salt bath twice a day for 3 days to try to help with healing, but if that doesn't start to rapidly clear it up, I do think a vet visit is in order. They'll want to check to make sure there's no infection or tumor that is preventing healing. Let the vet know right away how much your budget is, so the vet can use your resources as effectively as possible to get Lira feeling better. Good luck!
