Why is my dog constipated and straining after hookworm treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 months and 4 days old | 30 lbs

After a forceful bout of diarrhea, my dog was diagnosed with hookworms and was dewormed with Stongid but never pooped. 2 days later she is still constipated. She is only passing tiny, dry stool, and strains to do so. She is refusing plain water but is eating normally so I have been adding pumpkin purée and water to her canned food but her stool is still not normal. She is urinating normally. Her anus is very red and swollen and itchy. Is this colitis? Hemmoroids? Or something more serious?

Poor Jo, she sounds very uncomfortable! Impaction and constipation can occur following bowel upsets and also with partial bowel obstruction. I recommend a quick recheck by your vet, they may want to do an abdominal xray to rule out any bowel obstruction or twists which are preventing normal bowel motion. An enema and further laxatives and fiber supplements may be required
