Why does my dog have a sudden hard bump on her snout and red sores?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 40 lbs

My dog randomly developed a hard bump right on her snout. It was not there a few hours ago. She doesn't seem to be in pain, and she is not scratching at it or anything. She recently had fleas if that matters. She just turned 1 year old a few days ago She also has red sores around her mouth that have been there for a while

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A lot of skin bumps and lumps can look the same. She could have hit her nose on something and the bump is related to trauma and will go away, it could be a benign growth (like a histiocytoma), it could be part of a skin infection or immune reaction, hives or a cancerous growth. If the bump doesn't resolve in a few days I recommend having your Vet look at it. The sores around her mouth can also be due to infection or an immune condition and may or may not be related to the new bump on her nose. I hope this helps and I wish Luna a speedy recovery!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! It is difficult to tell exactly what the bumps are from the photos. It is possible that these bumps are part of a skin infection. I would suggest using a shampoo such as Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would give it 2-3 weeks of using the shampoo before seeing 100% improvement. If the bumps are still there in 2-3 weeks are are worsening over the next 2-3 weeks, I would get Jack seen by his veterinarian for an exam, further testing and treatment. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other concerns.

Those bumps may be related to infected or blocked pores. Keeping her muzzle clean and using a medicated wipe may help. Starting her on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs may also help. Best of luck.

Hello. I honestly can not really distinguish what you are concerned about on Motley's snout, but I would guess you are seeing warts or perhaps small tumors. This is not necessarily a scary sign, especially given her age. Since I really cannot evaluate her skin thoroughly, just have your vet look at things at your earliest convenience. No emergency to do so, just maybe in the next week if you can. Better safe than sorry. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach
