Why does my dog have a wet, matted, painful hotspot on his back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 7 years and 7 months old | 79 lbs

My dog has a weird matted circular area on his back, when I looked at it closer it appeared to be "wet" and he is clearly sensitive there. Every time I try and look at it he tries to pull away. Please help anyway you can, we can't really afford to goto a vet :( we love our dog and we are very worried. Thank you for your time.

This looks like Shaggy may have a hotspot (a local infection in the skin). To completely determine what this is Shaggy would need to have that spot shaved and cleaned up. If what he has is a hotspot, antibiotics and sometimes topical medication can help. I would look in your area for low cost clinics or even talk to the ASPCA. In some areas the ASPCA will have low cost veterinary care for animals. Here is a low cost clinic in your area. If you call them, they may be able to tell you how much it would be to shave that area and clean it up. http://facespayneuter.org/clinic/clinics/ I hope Shaggy is feeling better and thank you for using PetCoach!
