Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 8 months and 16 days old | 2.5 lbs

I have a Yorkie puppy (8 months).. She is constantly trying to urinate and nothing comes out. We thought it was an infection but antibiotics didn’t help. This has been going. On for a month. Can you help?

Hi there. It sounds like Athena is straining to urinate. This can be caused by infection which sounds like you have dealt with, however I would make sure you check her urine again and make sure the infection has not come back. I would also have your veterinarian do a vaginal exam and also do ultrasound and make sure she doesn’t have an anatomical defect causing her to have problems urinating. I hope that helps guide you with that Athena and thank you so much for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I'm so sorry Swayde is having this problem. I would strongly recommend having your veterinarian examine her and check a urine sample. She may have a bacterial urinary tract infection that will only get worse if it is not treated. I have attached more information on urinary tract infections below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2457 Urinary tract infections often make dogs feel like they have to urinate all the time (even when their bladder is empty) which might explain the signs you are seeing. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Swayde feels better soon. Thanks for using PetCoach.
