Newly adopted dog not eating, doing downward dog, and vomiting. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 2.5 lbs

My dog has not been eating today. We just adopted him about a week ago. He is a very thin and small chihuahua about 8 years old and he has just done a downward dog position about three times, which is unusual for him. He has had water, and when he goes outside everything is normal. His stomach has been active since last night and he has vomited clear once. What could be wrong?

I’m sorry to hear Wrigley isn’t feeling well. Dogs often do the downward dog stance when their abdomen is painful, especially with pancreatitis. If you have only had him a week many shelters have an agreement for a short time that they will care for health concerns in that time frame. I would recommend calling the shelter tomorrow as well as having him seen by a veterinarian tomorrow. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
