Why is my old dog shaking, can't stand, and licking her paw in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Female | spayed | 60 lbs

The dog I am sitting for is very old and deaf. She has had a limp before her owners left but now she can't seem to stand and when she breathes her whole body shakes. She isn't cold, she has a heater and is also licking her front paw.

Hi there. Sadie could have a lot of different things going on especially if she’s an older dog. Shaking can indicate pain or any kind of general discomfort. If she’s licking her front leg a lot she may have some pain isolated to that area and that is why she’s licking it. If you are concerned I would recommend contacting her owners and see if you can have a vet check her and make sure nothing else is going on and also check her for pain. If she’s painful the vet can prescribe something that would be safe for her and make her more comfortable.
