Are tiny bugs on eggs chicken parasites? Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I opened a box of eggs last night and noticed some tiny insects on the surface of one of them. That particular egg was streaked with a little dirt (presumably poop that wasn’t cleaned off when being packaged up?). There was no sign on the other eggs, so I used them and disposed of the one with the insects and the packaging. I’m now panicking that I / my kitchen is infected with chicken parasites... Any ideas 1. what they would have been and 2. if I should be worried? Thank you! Fraser

Sorry, I really don't have much of an idea what they could have been! Eggs that are commercially purchased are usually cleaned prior to placing them in the box, so it is possible that this contamination happened somewhere after they were packaged and got to your house. I would just look closely for any signs of insects in your house, but I feel it is unlikely you will get an infestation from this situation.
