My kitten was hit by a door; now has dilated eye & lethargy. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Good afternoon. Last night my kitten was playing around the house, as I was closing my porch door I had no idea she dashed passed me and got caught in the door. The door must have hit her head or neck as she fell back and began coughing blood, her eye seems to be dilated as well. She is in better condition this morning as she is walking and moving fine. Her eye seems to open more but still dilated. She is eating well and drinking alot, but she is lethargic and sleeps often. Some advice please.

Trauma to the eye, head, and neck can result in many different problems. I am glad she seems improved today, but I would still highly encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian. If the eye has an injury early intervention is best. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.

I am sorry to hear that your little kitten isn’t feeling well. Pictures are 2 dimensional and sometimes seeing signs of swelling is difficult, but to me there appears to be swelling under the eye as well as squinting of the eye. Often times swelling in this area originated in the mouth. It is also possible that she may have an upper respiratory virus or infection. I would highly encourage you to consider having her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Once they establish what is causing the swelling they will make recommendations for a treatment plan. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
