Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 years and 3 months old | 12 lbs
My 8-year old black American Shorthair female cat, Ruby, has some hair thinning (not hair loss) on her belly. Doesn't look red - no spots/scratches/excessive licking, just a large area where the hair looks like it's thinned out quite a bit. Don't know if this is normal or if we're just noticing it more on her, because she's a black cat. She also has a bit of hair loss on the underside of her tail and her back legs. No change in eating/drinking/pooping/peeing. Still affectionate and playful.

Without a photo, its hard to say whats happening with Ruby. If the skin looks totally normal (no redness, flakey skin, scabs...etc) then its possible Ruby is simply over grooming. Some cats with lick their fur until it thins out as a habit (like people biting their nails). Hairloss in general can indicate many things: parasites, fungal infections, thyroid conditions, metabolic imbalances. When in doubt, I recommend a trip to the vet to have her thoroughly checked out. Hope you get it figured out soon!
