How to know when to put an old dog with cancer and dementia to sleep?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 15 years and 1 month old

I’m wondering if it’s the right time to put my dog to sleep. She’s 15 and has had suspected liver cancer for 1 year. She’s plodding on but slowly declining and now defecates in the house most nights, gets very stressed if she wakes up and is alone; she used to sleep with us but is now locked in the kitchen due to her nighttime wandering and mess making. She has doggy dementia and is often walking into things, but isn’t in obvious pain, she still enjoys food, cuddles and small walks during the day

According to your description, i would say it is probably still a little too soon, she seems to be enjoying food, walks and love and does not seem to be in pain, i would say she is probably still enjoying life more than she suffers.
