Senior dog separation anxiety barking: What collars or meds help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 7 lbs

My dog is over 13 years old and has really bad separation anxiety and my mom just moved into a new apartment but every time she leaves, he barks constantly. He even barks early in the morning when she leaves for work. She doesn't want to get rid of him because he's our baby, but she can't afford to move anywhere else that'll allow dogs. I was wondering what the best thing for him would be? Medicine? Or some kind of collar maybe?

At 13 years of age, it would definitely be a shame to have to rehome your dog. I would absolutely try a few different interventions first before even considering that. Look into the Adaptil Collar, which is a collar that releases a substances known to produce a calming affect in dogs. I have had success with this in several cases, though it is not usually immediate. If you are in need of a more immediate intervention, there are definitely medications that you can discuss with your veterinarian that are used to produce a calming effect and reduce anxiety. You might also look into products like the Thundershirt. Lastly, there are collars designed to produce an unpleasant side effect when a dog barks. These can come in the form of water, citronella, or mild electric shock. The citronella collars are completely harmless and often extremely effective, particularly in smaller dogs I have found. Hope this helps.
