Why is my cat with kidney disease losing hair in clumps, not itchy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

Marcus is a DSH cat approx 11 years old. Was diagnosed with kidney failure a few months ago. Currently gets sub Q fluids once a week and is taking potassium and phosphorus daily. Over the past few years has had what we thought allergies and thinned out hair in different spots. Have never really noticed excessive grooming and no scabs. This last few weeks he has hair just falling out. Find clumps of hair in his bed and on floor around the house. Not itching. Not uncomfortable. Primary on legs

Hello. Thank you for your question about Marcus. It sounds like he is suffering from allergies. This is likely unrelated to his kidney disease. Cats can have allergies to food or to something in the environment. Typically what we see is loss of hair, itching, scabs. Feline allergies can be managed with injections or a medicine called cyclosporine. There is also the possibility that he could have a parasitic skin infection but this would be more unlikely. I would recommend taking Marcus to Your veterinarian and having them check for these things. I would also have them run a bloodwork panel and make sure everything else is looking normal and that an underlying organ malfunction is not what is causing the hair loss. Best to you and Marcus.
