My cat is obese, not overeating. How to get vet to check deeper?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 20 lbs

I have three cats, two from same litter, one is very obese. he doesn't eat more than the others but my vet wouldn't even test for hypothyroid because he says cats get hyper, not hypo but I strongly believe it is some type of disorder rather than his eating habits. He is 3 yrs. old now. Didn't get fat till he was 2ish. How should I go about asking a vet to check deeper into what may be causing his overweightness? Thanks.

Hi there. Cats aren’t usually hypothyroid as you mentioned but it would still be good to have his blood work checked for endocrine disease, diabetes, etc. I would start with a general blood panel and if that’s normal, your cat is likely just not metabolizing well and should be put on a diet food like Satieity from Royal Canin. Start with blood work and go from there. Best to you and Blue!
