My dog has an air pocket sound on her hip after a seizure. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dutch Shepherd | Female | spayed | 45 lbs

My dog has seizures and she had one about an hour ago. She is taking phenobarbital right now regularly and I was petting her after the seizure and when i would pet one spot above her left hip it felt like there was an air pocket because i would push on it and it would make a "pft" sound similar to a small fart like sound. She is a brindle dutch shepherd that is 7 years old. I attached photos of where it sounds like there is an airpocket. Is it anything I should be concerned about.

Air can get under the skin and cause what you are describing, but there are only two ways this can happen: 1) A skin laceration - This would be near where the air pocket is and possibly in the groin area. 2) Air leaking from the respiratory system under the skin - This would be an unlikely area for the air to be if this were to be the case. Also, Scout would be showing signs of respiratory distress. The other possibility is that this is fluid under the skin. This can happen with certain cysts and when fluid from the joint leaks out. It would be best to have a vet evaluate her, so they can determine the cause of this. Hopefully that helps and Scout gets better soon.
