How can my new puppy bond with my boyfriend and stop peeing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 1 day old | 14.9 lbs

So, my boyfriend and I recently got two puppies; a boy and girl. The boy dog has warmed up, but the girl dog has only warmed up to me. Every time my boyfriend calls her name or tries to pick her up she hides or pees on the floor. She has attached to me, and I have been ignoring her when she tries to jump on me so my boyfriend can get her to lay by him. It’s doesnt work, so what should we do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend that your boyfriend pets her frequently always approaching her very slowly and with a calm voice and demeanor. Also, it would help if he approaches her with treats. I find peanut butter in this type of scenario very helpful as it takes time to lick it off which will give him more time to pet her at the same time. Usually this works well. This will take time and patience but I think that eventually she will warm up to him. Good luck and have a good day!
