Pregnant: Can I catch toxoplasmosis from a cat's fur or clothes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male

Hello, I have a question about kittens and toxoplasmosis. I am currently 8 months pregnant and my sister has just found a five month old kitten. Is there a way to tell if a cat has toxoplasmosis from how they act/look? My sister has the cat on her bed and I am afraid that when she visits me she could pass on the disease to me, would this be possible? How long can the disease live on clothes/hair/skin? Am I at risk if she visits? Thanks very much. Loelia

Toxoplasmosis can be diagnosed by blood work or a fecal examination. However toxoplasma takes 24 hours after a bowel movement to become infectious. So if your sister cleans the box daily, and showers daily, and wears clean clothes daily then the likelihood of contamination approaches zero. I am a veterinarian, and touch cats daily, and had my antibodies tested before pregnancy and I have never been exposed. I hope this helps explain this for you. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
