Can muscle rub ingredients like menthol cause kidney failure in cats?

I have heard that there is an ingredient in either cold rubs or heat rubs for muscles that can cause kidney failure in your cats is this true and what is it

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Most rubs contain Methyl salicylate & Menthol. Contact with an owner's skin should cause no problems. Ingesting the cream could cause gastrointestinal signs, like an exposure to aspirin. Try & keep your cats from licking your skin if you are using any of these products, but casual contact will not result in kidney failure.
