Pug sleep apnea: Can dogs use CPAP masks if surgery isn't an option?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 18 lbs

Hi my pug has really bad sleep apnea. She's only 1 and a half years old but has to gasp for air every minute of sleeping. I live on Nepal so surgery isnt on the table. Are there such things as sleep apnea masks for dogs ?? She's struggling so much. Many thanks Alina

Hi Alina and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Layla. To my knowledge, I don't know of any CPAP devices for pets but I have thought for a long time that those devices would be amazing. I suffer from Obstructive Sleep Disorder (Sleep Apnea) myself and know firsthand how devastating the effects are. In theory, some of the brachycephalic breeds out there most likely suffer from the effects of sleep apnea but treating it without surgery is a most difficult proposition. Just getting them to wear a device and to stay still would be extremely difficult to accomplish. So ultimately, and unfortunately, the best ways to attack this problem is with surgical procedures to help these guys breathe easier. Good luck with Layla.
