My dog has chronic yeast & weight loss. Is it time to put him down?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 3 months old | 80 lbs

I need professional opinion on if I should put my dog down. Or to know if he’s suffering please help. He has yeast on his skin which makes him itchy 24/7 so itchy to where he attaches off hair and sometimes bleeds. He have tried to cure his yeast multiple times a but it keeps coming back. We can’t afford to take him back to the vet and treat him again because it will just come back. He has lost a lot of weight in the span of just 2 weeks. He was chunky and healthy but now he won’t gain weight.

I am so sorry Titus is going through this. I have a few patients who are on ketoconazole (anti yeast medication) twice a week for the rest of their life to maintain them. It can be very challenging and frustrating disease to treat. If this isn’t a possibility for you then I think considering euthanasia is a humane consideration. Anytime I am considering euthanasia I ask myself if my dog is living the quality of life that I want for him. If the answer is no, then I believe euthanasia is appropriate. I am so sorry you are dealing with this concern. Thank you for entrusting us with helping you. Take care.
