My dog is skipping meals and won't eat. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 10 days old | 26 lbs

My dog over the past two weeks has skipped breakfast every couple of days. He knows his routine and is usually eager to eat when he wakes up, but some days he gets up and won’t eat until the evening. There have been no changes in food and he isn’t taking medications right now. I’m concerned today because it’s now the usual time he eats his second meal and he still hasn’t gone to his food bowl. He’s drinking water fine and there’s no issues with his stool or urine.

Hi there and thanks for posting! It is hard to say what the cause of Beltre's new behavior around food may be attributed to without examining him first, but disinterest in food may be caused by a dental pain from an infection or gingivitis. There can be other medical causes as well but I would recommend Beltre see a veterinarian soon to rule out dental disease as a cause first. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
