My dog limps, knee feels dislocated, but shows no pain or swelling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Male | neutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

My 6yr old, 12 lb Papillon Ptolemy has been limping for about 10 days now but was healthy up until it started. It's usually the worst when he gets up from sleeping and seems less bothersome on walks (he swings his hips a bit and only touches his toes when standing still). There is a small bulge where his knee joint is that feels almost as if his knee is dislocating but it doesn't seem painful to touch, no swelling either. He also hasnt had a major accident or running issues. Thanks for any help.

Hi and thanks for posting on PeCoach! I am sorry to hear Ptolemy is limping! It is hard to say exactly what the issue may be without examining him first, but from your description, it sounds like Ptolemy may have a torn ACL or perhaps a luxated patella. I would recommend Ptolemy see a veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and an x-ray. Dog hide their pain very well and do not show it in the same way people do, but if he is limping, he is uncomfortable. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Ptolemy!
