My dog is extremely itchy and rolling around, but has no fleas. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 18 lbs

My 'new"dog,a 5yr old mongrel, hasn't got fleas but is very itchy. She is so uncomfortable that she rolls on the ground like a horse and bangs her hips violently. Her diet is healthy, doesn't have leftovers etc. I brush her regularly although she doesn't like it.

It's possible that Minu' could have a skin mite infestation. She also may have an allergy to something in her environment like a certain type of grass, weeds, pollen, or even dust mites. I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian who will take a full history and possibly do a skin test to try to determine the cause. This way, appropriate treatments can be prescribed to decrease the itch and make Minu' feel better.
