My 5-month-old kitten is lethargic and peeing a lot. Is he sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4.3 lbs

My kitty is 5 months old, and he's been lathergic since yesterday afternoon,. He's usually very playful but now no interest, and I didn't know then that soaking the litter box was a sign of sickness. His ears are a little warm. How long does it take for the kidneys to be to damaged to treat?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. With the symptoms you are describing I would recommend having Oscar examined by your veterinarian and have further testing done to help determine what the problem could be. The kidneys may not be the problem. This could be infectious or if he ate something and it is now stuck in his GI tract could be the problem. Further testing such as abdominal x-rays and blood work should be performed. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed.

I'm so sorry Pookie isn't feeing well. I am very concerned that something is wrong with her kidneys given that she is drinking lots of water and is lethargic. Given she is so young, I would be concerned about a possible congenital problem going on. She also could have a viral infection, as many young cats experience these. Many young kittens also have intestinal parasites that can make them quite ill. I would recommend you take her to your vet as soon as you are able to get evaluated. She likely needs a good exam, her temperature checked to see if she has a fever, a fecal check, and possibly blood work to determine what is going on. Based on what is found by your vet, they can tell you the best treatment to get her back on track! Good luck!
