How do I stop my 10-month-old kitten from biting and scratching hands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 months and 22 days old

My 10 month old kitten bites and scratches hands and feet! She's very friendly and curious but every now and then, she just attacks for no reason. I've tried time out, spraying her with a vinegar/water spray, shouting 'No' at her. I've even smacked her a couple of times but nothing seems to work. 99% of the time, she's a lovely cat but I feel that I can't fully trust her. Have you any suggestions of what I can do please? Thank you, Mandy

This is not uncommon cat behavior especially if weaned away from mother and siblings before 12-16weeks of age. A calming diet or supplement can help as can pheromone products but it is also very important to learn to read her body language and back off before she feels she has to lash out. There are some very useful cat behavior and body language articles here on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and also on Icatcare (international care association) site. Most importantly watch for flattened ears, swishing tail and do not pet her behind the shoulders or over her back legs as this frequently triggers reactions
