Diabetic dog on insulin: What do urine glucose and blood results mean?

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 9 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

My 10 y/o Maltese was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I checked her urine with reagent test strip and glucose was +2 specific gravity was 1.040 and blood was +3. She gets 3 units of insulin BID

Glucose in the urine is a good screening test for diabetes; however you can still get some spillage of glucose in the urine and still have controlled diabetes status. If you don’t see increased urination and drinking and don’t have high readings on your periodic glucose curves through your vet, then Ellie’s condition is being managed well at the 3 units BID. Most pets need around 0.5 unit/kg twice daily dosage to manage their Diabetes well. If your pet has not had a glucose curve yet, then I would inquire with your vet about getting one done to fully assess Ellie’s conditon.
