Why are my dog's eyes crossed after pink eye, plus foaming and thirst?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 96 lbs

My 6 yr old Bullweiller has been diagnosed with pink eye and we've been putting the prescribed ointment in his eyes every 8 hrs for 6 days now. But why do his eyes look crossed? He's having trouble seeing which I chalked up the ointment but his eyes look wayward. Not crossed to the middle but outward. He's also drinking a lot of water, producing foam around his chin and makes sounds almost like he has peanut butter in the roof of his mouth.

Most conjunctivitis cases (not all) should be much improved within 6 days and they usually don’t have those other signs you describe. I am worried that something else may be going on. I would highly encourage you to schedule a follow up appointment with your veterinarian. Some disease processes don’t show all symptoms the first time we see the patient and so repeated physical examinations can be very important as new symptoms develop. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.
