Why is my cat hissing, smelling, and licking an infected wound?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years and 7 months old | 7 lbs

Hi, so recently when I've been trying to pick up my cat (smudge) she has been hissing at me and I didn't know why, today there was a disgusting strong smell coming from smudge. I took a closer look and seen she had a little scratch or something on her side which is clearly infected. The weird thing is that when I was cleaning off a bit of the puss she didn't seem to be in pain at all, only when I'm lifting her up so I'm not sure what's wrong. She is licking the wound a lot , should I stop her?

Poor Smudge. I would recommend taking smudge to a vet to have the wound checked out. IFs he is an outside cat I would be concerned about an abscess. Sometimes if cats have an abscess they will be very painful until it ruptures but than you will see the infection/smell. IF she does have an abscess she will need some antibiotics to help resolve the issue. Other possibilities are skin mites, parasites or fungal issues. A vet visit would be best. Hope Smudge feels better soon
