Why is my dog ignoring me for a new person? How can I change it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Female | spayed | 11 years and 1 month old

Sky is 11, my sister moved in in March and now my dog literally follows her about everywhere and pines to go in her room she wants nothing to do with us when she's around. I don't understand this as she use to dote on me and my partner for everything now she wants nothing to do with us when she's around, which is upsetting. I don't understand this behaviour. We have done everything for her and loved to pieces for 11 years! Any ideas why she could be behaving this way or how I can change it?

Great news that Sky is so friendly with new people! Dogs will have favourites in the same way that we will and there is very little you can do to discourage this. Try to spend quality time playing with her and doing some reward training and this may help to refocus her attentions!
