Dog's dark urine after fight injury. Is it serious? More water?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 3 months old | 7 lbs

My 5 year old chihuahua was in a dog fight yesterday and had one of his muscles in his upper left shoulder area torn. Today when he urinated after almost 24 hours after the injury his urine was very dark brownish yellow. I assume this is due to the injury sustained? As he had no internal damage and was not sick prior to the fight. He's ate and drank for the first time today like normal. Should I be forcing more water into him?

Yes, dark urine can be a sign of dehydration or muscle damage. With a dog fight I usually prescribe pain medication and antibiotics so the wound doesn’t get infected. Since he’s feeling somewhat better now and eating I would add more water to his kibble and some wet food also, making it sloppy or like soup. This will increase his fluid intake. Check the urine color as it should become pale yellow again if he’s drinking enough. I hope Sheldon recovers soon.
