My puppy beat Parvo. When can he safely go outside or meet dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 22 days old | 10.2 lbs

My puppy was Diagnose with Parvo on the 20th of October & he seems like it’s gone. He hasn’t pooped in a while until yesterday, now it is back on track. I know he can’t be around other dogs because his poop has some Parvo in it, but I was wondering how long does he have to wait & can he go outside if there are no dogs such as a dog park or a walking trail?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It’s good to hear that your pup is doing well after contracting such a deadly virus. He is one of the lucky ones. To answer your question, the virus can shed in a pets poop for 10-14 days after being cured; therefore I would recommend waiting 15 days before allowing him to be around other pets. Even then I would probably only have him around pets that you know are vaccinated. It wouldn’t hurt to wait a full 3 weeks before having him go to dog parks and walking trails. Best wishes with your puppy Prince and again it’s wonderful to hear a puppy success story from Parvovirus infection. Best wishes and take care.
