My dog is on chemo. How long to regain lost weight and muscle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dogue de Bordeaux | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 100 lbs

My dog is going through chemo for lymphoma and has lost 5 kg in 3 weeks. He is eating well so how long will it take for him to start putting weight and muscle back on. He is a big dog, was 51kg before chemo , and is looking very thin. Just wondering how long till his muscles start to recover.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cooper! Once Copper is in remission and weaned down significantly or off the prednisone he hopefully will start regaining weight. The prednisone will cause muscle loss. And cancer also consumes a lot of energy and chemo makes them tend to eat less. He may not get back to his original weight or appearance, but with time he will put weight back on. I hope this helps and I wish you and Cooper the best!
