Why is my hamster freezing after being startled? Will she be okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 21 days old | 2 lbs

My hamster got startled during her playtime but after a few minutes she calmed back down, but after I put her back in her cage she would just freeze and lie close to a ground like a scared hamster would. She still took a treat from my hand though, so that means she isn’t scared of me right? Will she be fine or will she always be scared now?

It sounds as though she was still in shock. I would recommend to give her some time to relax and recover from the stressful situation. After some time has gone by check in her again and see if she’s better

Sometimes they just freeze as a defense mechanism or just to take everything in. If she is still eating and drinking normally and still playing and running around I wouldn't be too concerned. If this behavior gets worse or more frequent or if she stops eating or starts acting tired all the time, I would have a vet take a look at her. I hope this helps!
