My dog's paw is swollen and has pus from licking. Is it infected?

Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. This looks like an infection, possibly caused by excessive licking. This will need to be seen by a veterinarian who will have to determine whether there is a foreign body inbetween the pads (which could have started the licking behavior) and whether this infection is caused by bacteria or a fungus. Treatment would consist of clipping and disinfecting and removing any found foreign bodies as well as topical and/or oral medications. Your dog will need to wear an e-collar to prevent her from licking.

If there is green pus coming from the paw this is an indication of infection that requires antibiotic therapy. I would stop using hydrogen peroxide as it isn't recommended for regular wound cleaning (can actually delay healing if used repeatedly). Clean the area with mild soap and dry well to avoid moisture, apply a topical antibiotic ointment, place an e-collar on your dog to prevent him licking the foot and make an appointment for your dog to see the vet. He likely will need oral antibiotic treatment and the vet will want to check his paw to be sure there isn't a foreign body like a splinter stuck there.

Irritation and infection from licking can very well cause swelling and irritation like this, and KetoHex alone probably won't be enough to get the swelling down if he's still able to lick it. I highly recommend that you put an e-collar (also known as a cone) on VooDoo so that he can't get to the paw. I know it's rough on them, but they don't know not to lick, and he'll just wind up making his paw worse and worse. That being said, if the swelling doesn't go down after he hasn't been able to lick it for a while, I suggest re-visiting the vet to see if there could be anything stuck in the skin of his paw, like a tiny thorn. I have seen swelling like this caused by a foreign object in the past, and sometimes they can be very hard to see. The vet may also be able to prescribe some anti-inflammatories that will help with the swelling and pain (do not give anything over-the-counter as they could be dangerous to VooDoo). It looks like something is causing a lot of inflammation or even a possible infection on Pippin’s paw. Sometimes this can be related to the area staying wet and having a lot of fur on the feet. The fur can get wet and it will keep that moisture trapped to the skin. Other times this can be a random incident, dogs can get a one time skin infection. Other times it can be related to allergies, especially if it is becoming a frequent occurrence. At home, you want to make sure that she cannot lick the area. Use an Elizabethan collar at all times and this should prevent her from making it worse. You can also wash the feet with an antibacterial soap once a day. Rinse them well and make sure to dry thoroughly. This will help to exfoliate the skin and remove the oil and topical bacteria. The veterinarian may check the area for yeast and will likely recommend some sort of treatment and anti-inflammatory tablets. The paw looks quite infected, he will need a course of antibiotics in order to treat the infection, he will also need to wear an E-collar to stop him from licking the paw. i would recommend that you take him to the vet ASAP in order to get it treated.

you will need to take Faith to the vet in the morning, it's probably already infected and will require an antibiotic course. in order to prevent her from licking the vet will also recommend an e-collar to put around her neck for at least a few days.

Unfortunately I can’t tell from the photo if that is a skin growth like a tumor or an infection. I recommend to protect the area from any licking and she should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. I also recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. It looks like an inflammation, possibly due to an infection or allergic reaction. you can try treating it at home with Epsom salt bath to the paw 2-3 times a day. make sure you dry the paw very well after each bath. if you do not see any improvement within 4-5 days- take him to your vet to get it treated.

This does look a bit infected and the swelling and redness support this. I suggst you keep her from licking her foot (put an e-collar on her) and pay your veterinarian a visit for an exam and wound care.
