Pet's info: Dog | Italian Greyhound | Female | spayed | 16 years old | 13 lbs
My 16 year old female Italian Greyhound is bleeding from her anus. It all started this evening. At first, she had dark brown diarrhea which looked like chocolate syrup. A few minutes later, she was leaking a thick, bright red (like fresh blood) mucus-like substance from her anus. Also starting this evening, she will not eat anything, including treats. Just this morning, she was fine. What are the possible causes? Should I take her to the emergency room tonight, or can I wait until the daytime?

I'm sorry to hear Poe is not feeling well. I would recommend to take her into the emergency clinic. She's obviously not feeling well and they will be able to give her medications that should help her to feel better. They will also preform a thorough exam and likely recommend bloodwork and radiographs to look for the cause of the bleeding. Things that could cause the bleeding would be rectal masses, infected anal glands, poison, GI disease and neoplasia. The diagnostics will hopefully tell which one it is so you will know how to treat it. I hope Poe starts feeling better soon.
