Could my Golden's sunken eye and 3rd eyelid be Horner's after surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 68 lbs

My golden retriever had a spleen removed w benign tumor. Now she has eye sunken into head and 3rd eyelid showing. She is 9 1/2 but otherwise active and good appetite immediately after surgery. Hornessyndrome or something else? What can we do? This wasn't immediately after surgery. It came about 3 months after. She has had it maybe 2 mos now. She did lose weight

Hello, sorry to hear about Sandy. It does sound like this could be Horners syndrome which can be idiopathic or caused by trauma, a mass, or a brain lesion. Because of how long it has been going on, Sandy should be evaluated by your veterinarian to test for other neurologic deficits. If there are none, then this may be idiopathic horners which may take a long time to resolve. In the interim, Sandy should be having eye lubricant applied into her affected eye as most often, these dogs are unable to blink. Hope this helps and best of luck
