Why is my dog's face bloody after ear hematoma surgery? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 51 lbs

My dog just got hematoma surgery on her ear. They kept her overnight for 2 nights. I picked her up today and the whole side of her face is matted in dry blood. Is this normal for this type of surgery?

Yes. This is very common. Hematoma surgeries are meant to keep the incision open for the hematoma to continue to drain. Otherwise, it would fill right back up. If you can avoid the incision itself, you can use a warm wet washcloth to gently scrub and remove the dried blood. As time goes on, the drainage should improve and be less messy.
