My senior rescue dog pees and poops upstairs at night. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 years and 9 months old

We have a 7 year old rescue dog, he came from Spain, he has been here for 5 weeks and all has been fine until a week and half ago, he has started peeing and pooping upstairs in hallway at night, he goes out regularly 3 times a day, his last walk is around 10pm, he will poop and pee when out but still does it at night indoors, he is fed in morning at 9 am and again at 6 pm, he has grain free kibble and wet food mix for senior dog, I’ve cleaned the carpet to take away smell. Congratulations on adding Harry to your family! Dogs can get confused about housebreaking and its likely that he's not considering the upstairs a part of 'the house'. I would recommend to block his access to the upstairs anytime you are not there to be watching him. I would also recommend crating him at night so that he remembers that he can hold it through the night. I would do this for a month and then let him loose at night time (but not upstairs). If everything goes well for a few weeks, then you could try removing the barrier upstairs and see what happens. Best of luck!
