What calming treats for my dog's anxiety before car rides or vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 60 lbs

Hello! Archer has been through a lot before we adopted him from a rescue. He gets very anxious in cars, at the vet, in public& in pet stores. He becomes vocal and doesn’t listen. At home he doesn’t bark at all unless playing and listens very well. What calming treats do you recommend using before going out? Thank you!

A pheromone collar, such as the Adaptil collar, may be of benefit. Rescue Remedy for Pets is a liquid that can be given before or during times of stress. Zuke's also makes a Calming chew that may be effective. Along with these supplements, gradual desensitization to negative stimuli should be attempted. Do this by exposing Archer to the stimulus for ever increasing periods of time. Use praise and reward as he progresses.
