My older German Shepherd has recurring diarrhea. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

My German Shepherd had bad, mucousy diarrhea a few weeks ago. He was like that for a few hours so we didn't feed him. It seemed to go away but now it's back. He was a rescue & we've had him about 2 years now. The vet guesstimated him to be between 7-10 years old and according to her, he is healthy (when we went this summer). We currently have him on Purina One Lamb & Rice. Any suggestions what we should/could do?

I am sorry Chingo is not feeling well. With Chingo being older I would recommend taking him to the vet for a good exam and some basic testing like blood work. IT is possible that parasites, gastric upset or even infection has caused the diarrhea. However with his older age I would be concerned about possibly a more sever underlying disease. You can try an over the counter probiotic with a bland diet for 24-48 hours of boiled chicken and white rice. However if the diarrhea does not improve Chingo really needs to go to a vet. I hope that helps
