My senior dog has a black lump under his chin. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Male | neutered | 23 lbs

My sheltie is 15. He has had teeth problems in the past. He hurt his neck too. I noticed a cyst under his chin. Looked at it and it was black kinda like a mole. Its about the size of a marble. Should i be concerned?

Its hard to say if Junior's growth is worrisome or not without sampling it. In general most skin masses are benign but obviously there is always a change it malignant (which would be bad). The safest option would be to take him to the vet to have it aspirated. In general this will tell if it is benign or if you need to worried. Any changes in size or consistency are also worrisome so watch it closely. In my opinion, its better to be safe. Best of luck!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. With your description, I would suspect this is a benign skin tag or wart. However, without seeing this in person and not having any testing done on it, I cannot say for sure what it is. With juniors age, I would recommend having this looked at by your veterinarian and have testing done on it. Your vet can insert a small needle into the mass and look at the cells under a microscope to help determine what it could be. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed.
