Can my senior cat fly safely? What sedatives help with travel anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 12 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

Hi, I have a 12 year old female cat. Lately, when I travel for more than 3 days, even with a pet sitter who comes to feed her, she gets highly nervous and lonely. For Christmas I plan on visiting California which is a 5 hours plane ride. Would it be safe for her to travel with me and back on the plane under my seat? Is there any safe seditive that can help her relax? Thanks for your help!

I would think it would be safe for Cindy as long as she doesn't have any blood pressure issues. There are sedatives that would be safe. Talk to her veterinarian about Alprazolam which most cats tolerate very well. I recommend a trial run before the plane ride to make sure Cindy does well with it. Best of luck!
