My dog's wound won't heal after months of treatment. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 9 years and 9 months old | 55 lbs

My dog has had an open wound for about 8 months now. The vet prescribed antibiotics, which did nothing. I've been treating it with Vetericyn, colloidal silver and polysporin, and it's hasn't really changed in months. It started with pus under a scab, but doesn't seem to puss much anymore.

I would recommend that you have this area re-checked by your vet. If it has been present for months with a similar appearance and did not respond to antibiotics, then it may be a small poorly-healing skin tumor. After examination, the vet may collect a small sample of cells to be examined under the microscope to see what the mass is made of, or they may recommend biopsy or complete removal.
