Does Warfarin rat poison cause pain or suffering to rodents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | RagaMuffin | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 12 lbs

I have a rat problem in my garage, we purchased a poison with Warfarin in it. It seems to be working better than anything else we have tried. However, I was wondering if it causes suffering, pain, etc? I have a huge heart when it comes to anything living, so this has been very emotional for me and people make fun of me for caring.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Warfarin is an anti-coagulant. It prevents Vitamin K from binding and allowing proper formation of clotting factors. So the mouse dies by bleeding to death. They probably feel weak and dizzy and very sleepy. I am sure overall it isn't pleasant but not likely painful. But then again it is a poison. I hope this helps! Keep your huge heart!
