What caused my dog's swelling, anemia, and lump? Tick fever or cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 8 years old | 30 lbs

My dog had a swollen hind leg wich RESOLVED in 5 days.Since he was a bit lethargic we did blood test & found that hes platelets, rbc low & wbc HIGH. Suspecting tick fever vet put him on doxy & within 3 days he developed swelling in front leg & along chest. Within a week hes anemia worsened (white gums) & I also found a small marble shaped immovable lump on hes rib. I changed vet & he suspected cancer coz of swollen leg. However I lost my dog. What do u think could have been?tick fever or cancer?

I am sorry to hear of your loss but without a full post mortem exam there is no way of knowing what contributed to such a severe condition. Tumours in the legs generally do not resolve within 5days and the severe, progressive anemia would indicate a possible bone marrow condition or autoimmune disease which may possibly have been triggered by ticks or an internal tumour
