My dog had vomiting and diarrhea, now improving. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9.2 lbs

Is there anything that I can rule out since my dog is eating a little now and drinking water? He has been throwing up and has diarrhea. Already took him to the vet but didn't really get much answers from him. He seems to be getting better each day. I will be going tomorrow to get blood work taken and x-rays tomorrow. However, I'm just trying to see what else would be necessary to do. I don't want to put him through anything too invasive if I can avoid it.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In my opinion your next step is the absolute best option (appointment for bloodwork, radiographs). It is certainly a positive that Nilo is improving, but it is necessary to rule-out any underlying diseases that can have waxing/waning clinical signs. If he has been having diarrhea I typically recommend my patients to also bring a fecal sample so that it can be tested for parasites or other infectious causes of gastrointestinal upset.
