Should a father dog meet his newborn puppies, and when is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 26 lbs

Good day. My dog died 2 days after giving birth 7 puppies. They are now in the guests room, being properly fed and taking care of, but their father seems to be looking for them. Should I let him see them? Or is it best if I let the puppies grow stronger... They are 3 days old. Thanks.

I would introduce them to one to see his interest. Some other dogs are very good at mothering such as licking and cleaning and keeping warm, others are not and try to harm them. Hold one and see if he licks it and seems happy. If he growls or gets aggressive then keep them separate. But if it goes well then you can let him meet them all, he may do some of the work for you to help care for them
